BINAYAK BANDOPADHAYA



One of the most promising young poets of India, Binayak Banerjee is now regarded as the changing face of Bengali fiction. His debut novel Sohaginir Sange Ek Bachhar (A Year with Sohaginir) was published in 2008. Sikandar was published in 2009 to popular and critical acclaim. He combines a career in teaching and writing. Born and raised in Kolkata.

UPENDRAKISHORE ROYCHOWDHURY


Roychowdhury, Upendra Kishore (1863-1915) writer of juvenile literature, musician, artist, and a pioneer of Bengali printing industry. He was born in the village Masua in mymensingh district on 10 May 1863. His early name was Kamadaranjan Roy. At his age of five, one Hari Kishore RoyChowdhury, a relative of Upendra's father Kalinath Roy received him as an adopted son. He was then renamed as Upendra Kishore RoyChowdhury. Upendra passed the Entrance examination in 1880 with scholarship from Mymensingh Zila School. He studied for a while at Presidency College in Calcutta but passed BA examination in 1884 from Calcutta Metropolitan Institute.
He became an expert in drawing during his school-life. His first literary work was published in the famous juvenile magazine Sakha when he was a BA student in 1883 and from then on continued his literary work. Upendra played a pioneering role in the fields of Bangla juvenile literature by creating rhymes, folktales, fairytales, mythological tales, and science fiction adding fine drawings. He started publishing a monthly juvenile magazine Sandesh under his editorship which is now-a-days the most popular juvenile magazine published from Calcutta.
Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury
Upendra Kishore started experiment on printing of halftone pictures by establishing studio, darkroom, etc in 1896. He prepared various diaphragm, ray-screen adjuster, etc by research and became the inventor of diotype and ray-print process. Upendra wrote a number of books, of which most important are Chotoder Ramayan (1894-1895), Sekaler Katha (1903), Chotoder Mahabharat (1909), and Mahabharater Galpa (1909). World famous filmmaker satyajit ray was his grandson. Upendra Kishore RoyChowdhury breathed his last on 20 December 1915.

SUBODH GHOSH

 Entering into the world of Bengali literature in his thirties, Subodh Ghosh inspired the fiction writing into a new height focusing on the mix of scholastic with deep sensitivities in story telling. He stormed into writing when on request returned to his friend next day with his immortal story ‘Ajantrik’ (later filmed by Ritwik Ghatak), which follwed with many more outstanding stories and fictions. After finishing his college Subodh Ghosh took up all kinds of works for his and his family’s living. He worked with a Circus troupe, was a ticket vendor in buses, vaccination volunteer, overseer in mines etc. His path to fiction writing opend up once he joined a newspaper press as its proofreader. Later he became the assistant editor of this newspaper and also was one of the editorial writers of this largest circulated Bengali newspaper. Many of his stories are treasure of Bengali literature, so are his fictions, many of which are filmed by leading directors. Subodh Ghosh is also known for his scholastic writing like, ‘Bharater Adibasi (Tribals of India)’, ‘Bahratiya Fouzer Itihas (History of Indian army)’ and fictions like, ‘Bharatpremkatha’ based on the love stories spread in Mahabharata and ‘Kingbadantir Deshe’.
