SHANKAR

One of the best selling authors, Shankar appeared in the literary scene in 1961 with his novel ‘Kato Ajanare (The World Unknown)’in a literary magazine, ‘Desh’. His ever best selling novel, ‘Chowranghee’ has been translated into a number of national and international languages. Winner of Bankim Puraskar Shankar had a tough life to lead. He several kinds of jobs put survive, like, a hawker, a type writer cleaner, a typist, a clerk of a jute broker, a steno, a clerk with a lawyer etc. By now has written about a hundred books. He has also written short stories. He is more known for his incisive observation of the core of urban middle class Bengali society. His travelogue, ‘Epar Bangla Opar Bangla (Bengal : Beyond Borders)’ also became a best seller. He has written four books for children and several on the Saint Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. He has a number of collection of fictions. Two of his novels were filmed by Satyajit Ray.
