The most popular romantic voice of Bengali song’s golden age stops with his last breath; yes I am talk about one of my favorite singers from older time, Mrinal Chakraborty. His romantic voice captivated audiences from the fifties to till now. This renowned Bengali singer died following multi-organ failure on Wedness day last night at his age of 80.
He was admitted to a south Kolkata nursing home with stomach pain and underwent an operation on June 18. Though he showed the initial signs of improvement but his health condition worsened from June 21.
He was born in Rajpur in South 24-Parganas district and joined Gananatya Sangha (Communist Party’s cultural wing formed in the forties) under the influence of eminent composer Salil Chowdhury, as he was his neighbor at Rajpur. Though he had initial lessons in music from his mother but he also was trained by well-known classical vocalist Tarapada Chakraborty. Later, he was introduced to music circles in Kolkata by Dhananjoy Bhattacharya. His first record ‘Jamuna Kinare Sajahaner’ became an instant hit. After that he gave us many unforgettable melodies like ”Tung Tang Tung Tang Churir Tale,” ”Nodi Chole Jabei Jani” ”Hariye Phelechhi Mon,” ”Jodi Durey Chole Jai” and many others, all of which became very popular. He also did play-back singing for a number of films, notable being ”Archana,” ”Nirjon Saikate,” ”Tonsil,” ”Louhakapat,” ”Bohurupee,” ”Bon Jyotsnai,” ”Siulibari,” and ”Bidhilipi”.
We the fan as well as every Bengali will remember him with our heartedly concern and pray for his soul’s peace.
