Ahmed Sofa
Ahmed Sofa was born at Gachbaria in Chittagong district, Sofa’s career as a writer began in the 1960s. He never married. After receiving his secondary and higher secondary education in Chittagong, he studied at the University of Dhaka. Although he never paid much stress on formal education, he received his Master of Arts degree in political science; he later did research work towards a PhD, but was unable to earn the degree. Sofa started writing creatively in the 1960s, and wrote stories, novels, poems, essays, critical works, translations, juvenile literature, and compositions in other areas. He also edited many literary magazines. He is considered a successful writer of fiction and used his personal experience as the basis of his stories and novels.Sofa’s fictions were often based on his personal experience. He protested social injustice and tried to portray the hopes and dreams of common people through his writing. Sofa always handled his novels with meticulous thought and planning. The trend of telling mere stories in novels never attracted him; he always tried to innovate in both form and content. Surya Tumi Sathi (The Sun the Companion) was Sofa’s first novel. Onkar (The Om), Surya Tumi Sathi,Alat Chakra, Aali Kenan, Pushpa Briksha Ebong Bihanga Puran are his well known writting. On 28 July 2001, Ahmed Sofa died in a hospital in Dhaka. He was laid to rest in Mirpur Shaheed Buddhijibi (“Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard”).
